Pirates kidnapped 20 fishermen from Pakhkhidia point of the Bay of Bengal in Patharghata upazila on
Sunday.
The victims hail from different villages of the upazila. Barguna district trawler owners’ association president Golam Mostafa Chowdhury said a gang of bandits of ‘Bhai Bhai Bahini’ swooped on 20 trawlers while some fishermen were fishing at Pakhkhidia point around 9am.
The gang members looted fish, nets and cash worth Tk 25 lakh. They also took away 20 fishermen from the trawlers and demanded ransom for their release.
Contacted, Patharghata station commander of Bangladesh Coast Guard Ltd MA Rauf said they launched a drive to rescue the fishermen.
