Bangladesh yesterday reported 5,023 Covid-19 fresh cases while the coronavirus claimed 20 lives in the last 24 hours.
With this, the total fatalities and infections rose to 28,791 and 19,04,826 respectively, Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) press release said on Saturday.
“The country has reported 16.50 percent Covid-19 positive cases as 30,448 samples were tested in the past 24 hours. Of them, 5,023 are tested positive,” the statement added.
During the period, 8,821 more patients recovered from the illness, taking the total number of recoveries to 16,64,802.
The combined figure of coronavirus in Dhaka city and upazilas of the district is 3,614 while ten Covid-19 deaths were reported during the period.
From the beginning of the pandemic, 87.40 percent Covid-19 patients recovered among the infected people while 1.51 percent died, the DGHS statistics showed. The DGHS said among the total 28,791 fatalities, 12,633 occurred in Dhaka division, 5,808
in Chattogram, 2,115 in Rajshahi, 3,689 in Khulna, 966 in Barishal, 1,308 in Sylhet, 1,397 in Rangpur and 875 in Mymensingh divisions.
Bangladesh, however, first reported its coronavirus cases on March 8, 2020.
The virus first emerged in the Chinese city of Wuhan in December 2019 and then it spread to other countries.
To date, the epidemic infected 409,335,552 people and killed 5,822,572 across the globe, according to Worldometer, a website that compiles the number of new coronavirus cases and deaths from it.
However, the total number of people who recovered from the virus reached 329,655,400 across the world.
