Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mayor Atikul Islam on Saturday said 20 buildings will be declared as ideal considering their fire safety measures.
The mayor came up with the remarks after inaugurating the activities of a team inspecting fire safety measures in buildings of the city.
The team started their work after inspecting the existing fire system at Nagar Bhaban. Later, they
inspected ‘Unimart’, a superstore, at the basement of the bhaban.
Atikul said, the team will examine fire-exit stairs, fire alarm, fire-extinguishing training of security guards, regular fire drill and fire-extinguishing equipment in high-rise markets, hospitals and educational institutions. If the team does not find the system as satisfactory they will post a sticker on the entry gate of the building that will say the “fire-extinguishing system of the building is not satisfactory, be aware,” he said.
Besides, the building owners will be urged to take necessary steps as soon as possible, said the mayor.
Earlier, two teams numbering 10-15 were formed led by regional executive officer for each region of DNCC. Members of DNCC, fire service, private organizations and other communities were included in the team.
