The government has fixed a target of producing over 20.81 lakh bales of jute from over 1.93 lakh hectares of land during the current 2015-2016 seasons in the northern Bangladesh, officials sources said.
According to the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) sources, the farmers have been continuing sowing of jute seed in full swing everywhere already completing the process on over 20 percent of the targeted land area.
The farmers will produce over 19.76 lakh bales of ‘Tosha’ variety jute fibre from over 1.79 lakh hectares land and 1.05 lakh bales of ‘Deshi’ variety fibre from 13,850 hectares land in the region during the current season.
The farmers did not face any problem in procuring quality jute seeds this season as they got the same from the Bangladesh Agriculture Development Corporation (BADC), other government and non-government organisations and dealers.
Horticulture specialist of the DAE Khondker Md Mesbahul Islam said the farmers started sowing jute seed little lately for lack of adequate moisture, but are expected now to complete the sowing process in the coming weeks after rainfalls at most palaces.
Jute growers Solaiman Ali, Abdul Haque and Sukumar Roy appreciated the government for supplying ribbon machines to ease jute-rotting process even amid drought situation and upgrading fibre quality using ribbon-retting methods in recent years.
Noted agriculture scientist and Associate Director- Agriculture of BRAC International (South Asia & Africa) Dr M A Mazid asked the farmer to complete sowing of jute seed by this month-end to get better production.
He also suggested for using the Six Line Pick Up Jute Seeding Method to cultivate jute using only 2 kg seed per acre to save huge quantity of seed when they generally use 2.5 to 3.5 kg jute seed per acre land using the traditional method.
Dr Mazid put special emphasis on ensuring supply of quality jute seed to the farmers who have been showing more interests in jute farming as demand of the natural and eco-friendly fibre has been increasing very fast in the international markets.
Agriculture and Environment Coordinator of RDRS Bangladesh Mamunur Rashid suggested for expansion of jute-based industries and increased exports of jute products to further encouraging the farmers in farming the fibre in the northern region.
Deputy Director of the DAE Zulfiquer Haider said the field level officials of the DAE and other agriculture reacted organisations have been providing necessary assistance to the farmers for making the jute farming programme successful this season.
A total of 274 families and irrigation facilities will be connected with the new supply line. Thakurgaon Pally Biddut Samity will implement the work at a cost of Tk 90 lakh.
Heinemann invented homeopathic treatment to serve humanity
Speakers at a discussion here have said that father of the Homeopathy Treatment System (HTS) Dr Christian Friedrich Samuel Heinemann sacrificed his life in inventing and launching the HTS to serve the humanity.
They said that the HTS is still playing a significant role in ensuring effective medicare services without any side effects to the millions of people, especially the poorer section, across the world, including Bangladesh.
They were addressing the discussion organised by Mithapukur upazila unit of Bangladesh Homeopathic Professionals’ Association (BHPA) at its office in Mithapukur upazila town on Friday afternoon marking the 260th birth anniversary of Dr Frederic Samuel Heinemann.
President of Mithapukur upazila unit of BHPA Dr Monwar Hossain presided over the function.
General Secretary of Mithapukur upazila unit of the organisation Dr Azizar Rahman Litan, its Members Dr Mukul Mian, Dr Abdul Wares, Dr Matiur Rahman, Dr Enamul Haque and Dr Mizanur Rahman, addressed the discussion, among others.
Terming Dr Heinemann as one of the greatest scientists in medical sciences, the speakers said he invented the HTS through examining it in his own body and the alternate and effective medicare facilities which can ensure health services at the doorsteps of the people.
