Two workers died as a dredger sank in the Shitalakkhya River near Saoraid in Kaliganj upazila of Gazipur district in the early hours of Thursday.
The deceased have been identified as Shawkat Ali and Noab Ali, sand workers from Kurigram district, police said.
Quoting the locals, Kaliganj Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge (OC) Najmul
Haque Bhuiyan said that the dredger might have capsized after hit by another dredger or for a leak in the bottom of the watercraft.
The deceased, who went missing were sleeping when the dredger sank, the police official said. The rescue operation of the dredger was underway till the filing of the report last night, the OC said.
The bodies had been handed to the relatives, he said.
