Monty Chakma, general secretary of the United Peoples Democratic Front or UPDF’s women chapter and Doyasona Chakma, general secretary of the Federation’s Rangamati unit, were abducted from a UPDF hostel in Rangamati’s Kutukchharhi on Mar 18.
UPDF leader Michael Chakma told bdnews24.com the unidentified abductors freed Monty and Doyasona in front of APBN High School in Chagrhachharhi around 7:45pm on Thursday. Niron Chakma, a UPDF spokesperson, said the abductors freed the two to their families and public representatives.
He declined giving further details. Monty’s elder brother Subhash Chakma said they were on their way home. “We will give you the details on Friday morning,” he said. Rangamati Superintendent of Police Alamgir Kabir said they were not aware of the latest development and were checking it. UPDF blamed the breakaway faction ‘UPDF-Ganatantrik’ for the incident, an allegation the newly formed group denied.
Brishadhan Chakma, the father of Doyasona started a case against 19 people, including UPDF-Ganatantrik President Tapan Jyoti Chakma and Shaktiman Chakma, a vice-president of Parbatya Chattagram Janasnghati Samiti (MN-Larma), over the abduction. MN-Larma leader Shaktiman denied the accusation, saying the conflict between UPDF and the newly formed organisation led to the abduction.
