Alam Sarowar Tito, from Kishoreganj :A Kishoreganj court has sentenced Indian separatist group United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA)’s Organizing Secretary Major Ranjan Chowdhury and his Bangladeshi aide Pradip Marak life term imprisonment in two cases filed under Anti-terrorism Act and Arms Act.The court also fined each of the convicts Tk. 20,000. In default, they will suffer six months more in jail.District and Session Judge Mahbub-ul-Islam pronounced the verdict on Wednesday. The accused Major Ranjon Chowdhury is the son of late Madhu Sudhon Roy from Madhu Sulmari, P.S.- Gouripur, District- Bhubri, Asom, India. At present, he lives at Gazni village under Jhinaigati upazila in Sherpur district. He is a former General Secretary of Dhubra district unit of ULFA.Another one Pradip Marak is son of late Aroth Slangma from Bakakura Upazila in Sherpur district.Earlier on July 17, 2010, a team of RAB- 9 arrested Ranjan and his Bangladeshi aide Pradip from Kalikaprashed area under Bhairab upazila in Kishoreganj District.The law enforcers also recovered one pistol, one revolver, a large number of bullets, four handmade bombs and bomb making materials from Ranjan at Lakshmipur village under Bhairab upazila. Ranjan married a Bangladeshi woman and started living at Gazni village since 1997. He was making frequent trips to India for organisational purposes.Ranjan illegally entered the country through Kurigram district in September 1997 to meet ULFA military wing chief Paresh Barua in Dhaka.ULFA was operative under Ranjan’s leadership in Sherpur, Kurigram and Sylhet districts, and Bhairab upazilas in Kishoreganj district bordering Asom and Tripura.In 1995, Indian law enforces arrested Ranjan on his way back to India from Bhutan after his meeting with ULFA General Secretary Anup Chetia, who was convicted in several cases and has now been in jail in Bangladesh since 1997.Four cases were filed against ULFA leader Major Ranjon Chowdury and Pradip Marak under the arms act, Explosives substances Act, illegal immigration and Anti-terrorism acts.The prosecution was conducted by PP Adv Shah Azizul Hoque.
