Two probe bodies formed to look into a faulty cesarean operation when doctors cut the baby’s head off on March 18 here have submitted their respective reports.
A four-member probe committee, led by deputy director (Discipline) of the Directorate General of Health Services Dr Meher Parvin, submitted its report to the DGHS Director General on Monday while the three-member probe committee, led by Prof Dr Tareque Ahmed of Cumilla Medical College Hospital, submitted their report to the hospital’s director on April 1. However, the findings of the reports have not been disclosed yet.
Earlier on March 25, the High Court in a suo moto move summoned the Civil Surgeon of Cumilla and five physicians and two others to appear before it on April 4 over the matter. Those who
were summoned are Civil Surgeon Mujibur Rahman, director of Cumilla Medical College Hospital Dr Swapan Kumar Adhikari, Dr Nasrin Akter Popy, Dr Ayesha Afroz, Janiul Haq, Dilruba Sharmin and Karuna Rani Karmaker. The HC also issued a rule asking the government to explain as to why the authorities concerned should not be given directives to take stern action against those involved in the incident. Advocate Asaduzzaman and Segufta Tabassum of Ain O Salish Kendra placed the reports of two daily newspapers before the court. According to the reports, Julekha Begum, 30, wife of Shafiq Kazi of Muradnagar upazila, was admitted to Cumilla Medical College Hospital with labour pain on March 17. A five-member medical team, led by Dr Karuna Rani, conducted the C-section on the woman the following day. The physicians severed the head of the baby and cut off the uterus of Julekha during the operation, claimed Shafique. However, the hospital authorities said they cut off the head of baby and uterus of the woman for saving the life of the patient.
