Two separate probe committees have been formed over the custodial death of writer Mushtaq Ahmed.
A five-member committee has been formed by the Home Ministry while the two-member inquiry committee has been formed by Gazipur district administrations.
The Home Ministry issued a circular on Saturday in this regard, while Gazipur administration formed the committee on Friday night.
The Home Ministry’s circular said that committee’s five members are Home Ministry’s Additional Secretary of Security Services division Dr Tarun Kanti Sikder; Additional District Magistrate of Gazipur Abul Kalam; Deputy Inspector General of Prison in Mymensingh Jahangir Kabir; Gazipur district jail’s Assistant Surgeon Dr Kamrun Nahar; and Deputy Secretary of Security Services division in the Home Ministry Arif Ahmed.
The circular also said that the committee visited the spot to investigate the death of the detainee whether there was any negligence on the part of the jail authorities. If so, the responsible man is to be identified. It is to be investigated whether the prison authorities were aware of any health problems of the prisoner after his arrival in the prison? If so, whether appropriate treatment was taken in that regard or not?
The committee is requested to submit the report within the next four working days.
Meanwhile, Gazipur’s DC SM Tariqul Islam said that a two-member investigation committee has been constituted over Mushtaq Ahmed’s death in Kashimpur High Security Central Jail in Gazipur.
Two members are — Gazipur district administration’s Executive Magistrates Wasiuzzaman Chowdhury and Umme Habiba Farjana.
The committee has been asked to submit the investigation report within next two working days.
Writer Mushtaq Ahmed, 53, fell sick at the prison on Thursday evening. At 8:15pm, he was taken to Gazipur Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital where physicians declared him dead.
Police handed over his body to the family on Friday noon after finishing the report of postmortem and inquest.
