S.M. Solaiman, Distriuct and Session Judge of Bagerhat, in a judgment delivered on Thursday convicted two jungle pirates of Sundarbans and sentenced them to be hanged till their death on the charge of killing two fishermen who were own brothers in the forest. The convicted persons are Md. Zulfikar Ali alias Zulfu, son of one Habib Matobabr of village Joymony under Mongla Upazila in the district and Oli alias Raju alias Ratan, son of one Jamal Molla of village Mongla under the same Upazila. The former was the leader of Zulfikar Bahini, a gang notorious jungle pirates of Sundarban forest and the later was a member of the gang.
The prosecution case, in brief, is that Anwar Hossain Hawladar and Harun Hawladar, sons of one Mokles Hawladar of village Paschim Rajapur under Sharankhola Upazila in the district procured the permits from the forest office and went to Sundarban forest in the Eastern Division of the forest by boats along with some other fishermen on October 11, 2004 in order to catch fish from these. But during the period from October 17 to October 18, 2004 a number of fishermen including deceased Anwar Hawladar and Harun Howlader and 2 fishing boats were kidnapped by the jungle pirates in order to realize ransom and during the same period both Anwar Howladar and his brother Harun Hawladar were shot dead by the jungle pirates and their dead bodies were thrown into the rivers.
