Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal has handed over cash assistance to the two ‘Neo JMB’ activists, who earlier turned themselves in to police in Bogra.
Mahmudul Hasan Bijoy, 23, from Gaibandha and Bogra’s Abdul Hakim, 22, formally surrendered on Wednesday to the elite police unit, Rapid Action Battalion, at a ceremony in the city.
“We had chosen a dark path. We were encouraged by their statements of Islami Jihad,” Hakim told the gathering at a city auditorium. “We have realised our mistake. We do not believe in terrorism. Everyone who has gone on this path should return,” said Hakim, who RAB says is a friend of one of the
Gulshan cafe attackers Khairul Islam Payel, killed when army commandos stormed the eatery early on Jul 2.
The Home Minister handed over cheques of Tk 500,000 to each of them for purposes of their rehabilitation at the ceremony, which was attended by local MP Nurul Islam Omar, Bogra Deputy Commissioner Ashraf Uddin and RAB Director General Benazir Ahmed. Gaibandha’s Bijoy, who surrendered on Wednesday, offered his apologies while speaking at the ceremony. “They talk about killing Shias, Hindus and Christians. I have left that path. Please forgive me for what I have done and pray that I may be able to work for the country.”
