Two alleged criminals accused of involvement in the murder of a newly-elected union parishad chairman were killed in a ‘gunfight’ with police on the Gopalpur-Konchkuri road in Bhadsha union of Sadar upazila early Tuesday.
The deceased were identified as Munir Hossain, 32, son of Lutfor Rahman, a resident of Konchkuri village, and Mohammad Sohel Hossain, 35, son
of Nurul Islam, a resident of Chawalpaa village of the union.
They were accused in the murder of AK Azad, newly elected chairman of Bhadsha union. Ashok Kumar Pal, assistant superintendent of police (Sadar circle) said on information that the duo were preparing to launch an attack on the house of Azad at Konchkuchi village, a team of police, led by Farid Hossain, officer-in-charge of Sadar police station, went to the village at around 2.30am. Sensing presence of police, the criminals opened fire on them, prompting the law enforcers to retaliate back, triggering a gunfight. Later police recovered two bullet-hit bodies from the spot. Police also recovered two foreign-made pistols, two rounds of bullet, a magazine and some locally-made firearms from the spot. Besides, three policemen, including OC Farid, Assistant Sub-Inspector Moshiur Rahman and constable Mostafiz, were injured in the gunfight.
Earlier on June 4, a gang of miscreants attacked AK Azad at the village while he was returning home from Dhurgadoha Bazar, leaving him critically injured. He later succumbed to his injuries at Joypurhat Adhunic Hospital on Sunday. A pedestrian named Noyon also sustained bullet wounds in the incident.
