2 ‘muggers’ killed in gunfight

Two alleged muggers were killed in gunfight with police in Comilla and Pabna districts early Thursday.
Police picked up also three persons with two pistols and some domestic arms, including five machetes from the spot, in this connection. The deceased have been identified as Azad khan, 23, son of Shamsher Khan, inhabitant of Ashoktola, Comilla and Jahangir, Hossain 26, son of Mamtaj Malitha and resident of Ishwardi upazila in Pabna district, police said.
Khorshed Alam, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Comilla Kotwali Police Station said that a team of Detective Branch (DB) of police challenged a gang near Alekhar Char beside Dhaka-Chittagong highway in Sadar upazila around 5:00am on account of their suspicious movement. They were preparing to loot passengers, belonging and snatch a Dhaka-bound microbus. Sensing danger, the gang opened fire targeting the DB personnel, prompting them to retaliate with bullets. Azad came in the line of fire and was hit by a bullet during the gunfight. The doctors declared him dead when he was taken to Comilla Medical College and Hospital (CMCH). The DB team arrested three robbers along with a revolver and home-made firearms from the spot, the police official said.  
The arrested robbers were identified as Kawsar, 25; Shaon, 26, and Sayem, the OC said Biman Kumar Das, Officer-in-Charge of Ishwardi Police Station said that a patrol team of police launched a drive in front of Raju cinema hall at Ishwardi about 2:30 am where a gang of criminals gathered for mugging. Sensing the presence of police, the muggers opened fire on them, forcing them to hit back by firing, triggering a gunfight, leaving Jahangir injured. He was rushed to Ishwardi Upazila Health Complex but doctor referred him to Pabna Medical College and Hospital. He died on way to Pabna. The body was sent to the hospital morgue for an autopsy.
Jahangir was wanted in several cases on charge of snatching and robbing, the police official said.
Separate cases were registered in this connection, police sources said.
