Ashulia bank robbery: 2 more suspects held from Savar ‘They took part in robbery,’ claims DIG

Staff Reporter :A special squad of plainclothes police arrested two suspects from a residence at Kalmapara area at Savar in small hours of Friday in connection with Tuesday’s robbery at a bank in Ashulia. The arrested persons are Babul Sardar, 32 and Mintu Prodhan, 28. They are also involved in politics of Bangladesh Chhatra Shibir, a student wing of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, Deputy Inspector General (DIG), Dhaka Range Mahfuzul Haque Nuruzzaman told reporters at a press conference at Dhaka Metropolitan Police media centre on Friday.With the fresh arrest of two persons, the number of arrestees in the case now stands at four.He said the two–Babul Sardar and Mintu Prodhan directly took part in the Tuesday’s robbery at a branch of Bangladesh Commerce Bank Ltd at Kathgora in Ashulia and they are also the active members of a militant group.”Based on the information extracted from the two robbers caught during robbery, a special squad of Detective Branch Police led by additional superintended of police Kazi Asharful Alam raided different places of Savar and Gazipur and arrested them from a residence at Kalmapara area at Savar,” Mahfuzul Haque said. He claimed that they also dug out a militant den from where the law enforcers recovered huge bomb and grenade making materials, gun powder, four sharp weapons, two motorcycles, some jihadi books and leaflets.”Through looting money they wanted to raise fund for running their militant organisation and to create anarchy. And these were the main objective behind the robbery,” Mahfuzul Haque He further said once the arrestees were involved in Shibir politics and later they got involved in militant activities.The DIG said the robbers did not want to kill anyone during robbery, they only wanted to loot money.Those who involved in the incident directly are members of a militant group and had linked to a particular political party, he added.Earlier on Tuesday, at least eight people, including the bank manager and a robber, were killed and 23 others injured during a robbery bid at a branch of Bangladesh Commerce Bank Ltd at Kathgora in Ashulia.
