Dengue menace: 2 more die, 527 hospitalised

Two more women died of dengue in Rajshahi and Sirajganj districts on Saturday while 527 new patients were admitted to different hospitals across the country.
In Rajshahi, a woman identified as Roushan Ara, 55, wife of Moslem Uddin, from Bheramara upazila of Kusthia, died at the Intensive Care Unit of the Rajshahi Medical College Hospital around 10:00am, said RMCH deputy director Saiful Ferdous.
She admitted to the hospital with symptoms of dengue and her body organs were not functioning well, added Saiful Ferdouse.
After Roushan contracted the mosquito-borne disease, she was taken to a local Kusthia hospital on September 8, where doctors referred her to RMCH on September 10.
“She was shifted to the ICU of RMCH after her condition deteriorated on Thursday,” the official said.
In Sirajganj, a woman died from dengue while travelling to Dhaka for better treatment. The deceased is Nilufar Yasmin, 55, a resident of Notun Bhangabari area of Sirajganj municipality.
Sirajganj Civil Surgeon Office Statistician Humayun Kabir said: “She was admitted to North Bengal Medical College (NBMC) on September 11.”
“After that she was referred to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) for better treatment. She died on her way to Dhaka around 8:30pm on Friday.”
She died due to dengue shock syndrome, he added.
Till Saturday 156 people were admitted in Dhaka and 371 in districts outside Dhaka.
Dengue, a mosquito-borne virus, spreads among humans through its carrier, the Aedes mosquito.
The Health Emergency Operation Centre and Control Room at the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), in a press release on Saturday, said that the number of patients currently undergoing treatment in government and private hospitals in the country was 2,996.
A total of 60 dengue patients have died across the country from January 1 till September 14, according to the DGHS data. However, the unofficial death toll is reported to be over 154, so far.
As many as 1,285 patients are currently receiving treatment in 41 government and private hospitals in Dhaka, whereas 1,711 people are undergoing treatment outside Dhaka, the DGHS data said.
Since January 1 till September 14, a total of 80,567 people have been affected by dengue.
Among those admitted, a total of 77,368 have been released from their respective hospitals and clinics after treatment.
