Two mini stadiums named after Sheikh Russell are being constructed at Banaripara and Wazirpur upazila in Barisal. The Ministry of Youth and Sports has allocated Tk 12 crore 8 lakh 30 thousand for the construction of Sheikh Russell Mini Stadium in Banaripara and Tk 11 crore 53 lakh 71 thousand for Uzirpur Upazila.
It is learned that a possible site has been identified for the construction of the stadium at Kundihar village on the south side of Rayerhat Bridge on the Barisal-Banaripara-Swarupkathi road in Ward No. 8 of Banaripara Municipality and next to the Dhaka-Barisal Highway at Shikarpur Union in the adjoining upazila of Wazirpur Municipality.
In the spirit of bringing back the past sports tradition of Banaripara and Wazirpur and enriching the sports ground in these upazilas, the Member of Parliament of Barisal-2 constituency and former President of Bangladesh Chhatra League Central Committee and Member of Parliamentary Standing Committee on Ministry of Local Government Rural Development and Cooperatives Md. Shah Alam has taken the initiatives to build the stadiums. Allocation was made for the construction of Sheikh Russell Mini Stadium in these two upazilas in his constituency on the initiative of Shah Alam.
