The skins of sacrificial animals are still coming from different upazilas of Chattogram . Warehouse keepers and workers are busy in two warehouses in Atura depot area and Chaumuhani area of Agrabad to preserve leather.
The target for leather collection in Chattogram on Eid-ul-Azha was 3.5 lakh. The storekeepers said that the target has not been achieved yet. They say that the skins of the sacrificial animals were collected and sold by the seasonal traders to the warekeepers. Many people save the skin with salt in the hope of selling it later with high price.
Greater Chattogram Raw Leather Wareshouse Association President. Muslim Uddin said about two lakh skins have been collected in the yard so far. Many also sacrificed on Thursday (July 22). So some more skin may come.
Many have preserved the skin with salt, but have not sent it to the yard. Leather is still coming from different upazilas. Leather will be sent to tanneries in Dhaka in a couple of days.
The warehouse area of Atura Depot area on Hathazari-Muradpur road were seen busy while visited. The workers are cleaning the skin in the yard and preserving it with salt. warehouse keepers are busy buying leather.
In addition to the 112 warehouse keepers under the Greater Chattogram Raw Leather Wareshouse Association, more than a hundred traders are involved in leather collection and its preservation..
Seasonal traders complained that they could not sell the leather to the warehouse keepers at a fair price.
Maymun Hasan, a businessman from Agrabad, said he had to buy leather for Tk 300 and sell it for Tk 280.However, the wareshouse keepers claim that they are buying big leather for 400-500 taka and small leather for 200-300 taka. 10-12 rupees to process leather per foot and with transportation cost. Workers have to pay extra money.
Seasonal traders will suffer if they buy leather at a higher price without this calculation.
