Two alleged criminals were shot dead in separate “gunfights” with law enforcers in Mymensingh and Cox’s Bazar on Thursday.
They were identified as Hossain Ahmed, 32, who was killed in a “gunfight”
with the members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) in Cox’s Bazar. Another was Rafiqul Islam Khokon, 40, a former policemen, who died in gun battle with police in Mymensingh same day.
The BGB claimed that Hossain Ahmed was a Yaba trader killed in a “shootout” with them in Alikhali village in Teknaf upazila in in Cox’s Bazar districts. The BGB recovered 40,000 Yaba tablets from the spot.
On the other hand, Rafiqul Islam Khokon, an accused in six cases, was killed in a “shootout” with policemen in Iswarganj upazila in early hours of yesterday.
Three police personnel were injured including one with bullet wounds during the “gunfight”.
Acting on a tip-off, a team of Iswarganj police, led by its officer-in-charge Md Akhtaruzzaman, conducted a drive in Sohag Bazar area around 1:30am to detain the alleged drug peddling gang.Sensing presence of the law enforcers, the miscreants hurled four crude bombs and brickbats towards them, he alleged.
At one stage, Khokon fired at least four bullets targeting the policemen, who retaliated with bullets, leaving him injured, Akhtaruzzaman claimed. Khokon was rushed to Ishwarganj Upazila Health Complex where he succumbed to his injuries.
Khokon was sacked from police force in 2000 for his alleged involvement in illegal drug business and started drug trading in Sohagi area, police said.
Of the injured policemen, Masud Rana suffered bullet wounds during the “gunfight”.
