Two alleged muggers were killed in a ‘gunfight’ with the members of Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) in the city’s Motijheel area early Sunday.
One of the deceased was identified as Ramjan Ali Zaved, 35, son of Abdul Mannan, of Rayerbag in the city while the identity of the other could not be known immediately.
The DB recovered two firearms, four rounds of bullet and one motorbike from the spot, police said.
DB team challenged six persons on two motorcycles near Motijheel Ideal School and College at around 2:00 am. Sensing danger, they opened fire targeting the DB police members, who retaliated triggering a gunfight, police said.
The two miscreants were found seriously injured after the gun battle, police said.
Ramjan’s sister Rubina Begum said her brother went out from the house for a nearby mosque around 7:00pm and they found his cell phone switched off since 8:30pm on Saturday. ‘We came to know about his death from a television news this morning,’ she added.
Rubina denied Ramjan’s involvement in any criminal activity and said that they suspect the law enforcers have gunned down her brother following a conspiracy with any of his enemies.
Ramjan, who was a furniture shop owner in the capital’s Jatrabari area, was a leader of bus workers’ union in Kanchpur and Sonagaon areas one year before, she added. DB Deputy Commissioner (Public Relations) Masudur Rahman said two criminals were found seriously wounded after the exchange of fire.
The DMCH’s in-charge of the Police Outpost Mozammel Haque confirmed the matter.
