Two people were killed and 10 others injured in a fierce clash between two groups of villagers over harvesting paddy from a disputed cropland at Sonakhali village in Morelganj upazila on Friday.
The deceased were identified as Polash Sheikh, 40, son of Shahajahan Sheikh of Ambari village and Ibrahim Sheikh, 45, son of Torab Ali Sheikh of Patabari village of the upazila. Pankaj Chandra Roy, superintendent of Bagerhat police,
said Rahim Khan and Shahidul Islam Khan had long been at loggerheads over the ownership of one bigha of land at the village.
As a sequel to the dispute, the supporters of Shahidul Khan and Rahim Khan locked into a fierce fight around 9:00am over harvesting paddy from the cropland, leaving the two dead on the spot and 10 others injured. Two of the injured were taken to Khulna Medical College Hospital while four others admitted to Morelganj Health Complex. On information, police rushed in and brought the situation under control. They also detained six people for interrogation. Meanwhile, SP Pankaj Chandra Roy visited the spot.
