2 Jamaatmen killed in Jhenaidah gunfight with cops

Two leaders of Jamaat e Islami were killed, a robber arrested with bullet injury and five law enforcers sustained injury in two separate “gunfights” in Jhenaidah Sadar and Kaliganj upazila in the early hours of Tuesday.
The deceased were identified as Jahurul Islam, 38, son of Shamsher Ali of Jhenaidah Disharipara, and Dr. Sazib Ahmed Tarik, 36, son of Khondaker Abdul Latif of Arappur in Jhenaidah.
Jahurul Islam was serving as a lecturer at Keyarbazar College in Kaliganj, while Dr. Sazib Ahmed Tarik serving as a physician in Dhaka.

Nath Sarker said, two unidentified persons were killed and three police men sustained injury during a “gunfight” on the Jhenaidah by-pass road at about 3.45 AM on Tuesday.
He said, the police men chased a gang of robbers when they were marching towards Bhutiargati village in the town on motorbikes. Sensing the police presence the miscreants threw bombs and opened fire targetting the police men, who replied. As a result, two were critically injured. They were rushed to Jhenaidah Sadar Hospital where the attending physician declared them dead.
The law enforcers seized two shutter guns, five bombs, two rounds of ammunition, three swords, a motorbike and two hand bags from their possession. , the police said.
Constables Bulbul Ahmed, Alamgir Hossain and Nasir Uddin received injuries during the “gunfight”. They were provided primary treatment in the hospital, OC said.
Additional Superintendent of Jhenaidah police Azbahar Ali Sheikh said, Jahurul Islam was an accused in seven heinous cases.
He was an Ameer of the Jamaat in Jhenaidah, while Dr. Sazib Ahmed Tarik was the member of Dhaka West Chhatra Shibir Advisory Body. He was also an accused in a number of cases with different police stations.
But the police initially could not identify the deceased, the police official said.
On the other hand, Kaliganj Police Station Sub Inspector Imran Alam said, the mastermind of inter-district robber gang Nasir Uddin, 46, son of Shamsuddin Ahmed of Mithapukur village in Kaliganj was shot and the police seized a shutter gun, one round of ammunition and two swords from his possession. Nasiruddin was wanted in eight robbery cases with Kaliganj and surrounding police stations.
Police said, they arrested Nasir on Monday evening. They were trying to conduct drive to recover arms and ammunitions from the possession of the robber at about 4.00 am on Tuesday.
As the law enforcers arrived near Sinra-Jangal area on Barobazer-Taherpur road under Kaliganj upazila, the accomplices of Nasir opened shots targeting the policemen, who replied with 12 gunshots to protect themselves. Nasir was caught in the fire and sustained injury.
Police constable Sohag and Ansar-VDP member Manir Hossain received injury during the time. Injured robber leader Nasir was sent to Jhenaidah Sadar hospital, while the law enforcers were released after primary treatment. The police were preparing to file cases with respective police stations, the police said.
