2 persons including a China citizen died from poisonous gas at Meghna cement factory ghat in Mongla Port area in Bagerhat district on Sunday at noon when they entered into an abandoned cargo vessel of Meghna cement factory of Basundhara group, according to a report received here.
The deceased persons are Jung (50), a China citizen who came to Bangladesh in connection with the construction of Padma Bridge and he was engaged in river controlling affair and Masud Shaikh (40), a technician of the cement factory. He was the son of one Majid Shaikh of village Jhanjhania under Rampal Upazila in Bagerhat district. Gautam Kumar Biswas, Additional Police Super of Bagerhat visited the place of occurrence on the same day in the after noon.
Golam Mortaza, Manager (Administration) of Meghna cement factory disclosed, China citizen Jung purchased an old cargo vessel of the cement factory in auction recently. He came to the cement factory yesterday to see the cargo. He along with 3 employees of the cement factory went to the barge at noon and he alone entered into the interior of the same. But he did not return. So, technician Masud also entered into it in search of Jung, but he also did not return, though much time passed away. Then the rest 2 employees called the fire fighting unit of the cement factory and entered into the interior of the barge and recovered them unconscious from there. They were rushed to the local Mongla Port Hospital where the doctor on duty declared them dead. Dr. Prokash Mandol, a physician of the hospital disclosed, poisonous gas might be formed into the interior of the barge as it was not in service for a long and the victims, perhaps, died from the gas. The dead bodies were sent to Bagerhat Sadar Hospital for their autopsy.
