A court here on Thursday sentenced two people to life term imprisonment for killing a minor girl in the city’s Badda area in 2011.
The lifers are Manik Kumar Das, 20, hailing from Shakhati village in Munshiganj sadar upazila and Prokash Chandra Das, 22, hailing from Saturia upazila in Manikganj district. Among them, Prokash remained absconding after the incident. The court also
fined them Tk 50,000 each, in default, they will have to serve one year more rigorous imprisonment. According to prosecution, Manik Kumar Das used to live with his maternal aunt Rina Rani’s house in Uttar Badda area. When Manik wanted to marry Rina’s elder daughter Sushmita, 12, she refused to accept the proposal and asked him to leave the house.
On October 30, 2011, Manik along with Prokash came to Rina’s house and hit her with a sharp weapon, leaving her critically injured. As her two daughters Suborna, 4, and Swarna, 2, started to scream, Manik drowned Suborna in a big cooking pot filled with water, leaving her dead and also hit Swarna, leaving her injured.
Later, victim’s father Bhabodish Chandra Mrida filed a case with Badda Police Station against Manik and Prokash. Police arrested Manik from Rampura area on the day. He confessed to his involvement in the murder on November 3, 2011. After examining all the records and 15 witnesses, among 16, Judge Nur Uddin of Dhaka Speedy Trial Tribunal-1 handed down the verdict.
