Two ferries have been lying useless for the past couple of years. As a result no vehicles could not cross the Gorai River Langalbandh Ghat located at Sripur point in Magura and Sailkupa point in Jhenaidah.
The government is incurring huge loss every year, in the other hand, the objectives of installing ferry services could not be fulfilled ther.
According to local people, Langalbandh Bazar is situated beside Gorai River and border of three districts. The opposite sides located at Naduria Bazar under Pangsha upazila of Rajbari, Sreepur upazila of Magura district and Sailkupa in Jhenaidah.
As a result, thousands of passengers of Jhenidah, Magura, Rajbari and Kushtia districts cross the mighty Gorai River on local boats better known as Nauka amid risk, although two costly ferries have been lying idle at Langalbandh Bazar terminal.
Local people said, the Roads and Highways Department (RHD sent a ferry at Langalbandh bazar in 1997-98 for improving communication among the four districts. But for unknown reason there was no pontoon at any bazaar and Langalbandh bazar also then.
As a result, the ferry was lying for long. At a time, all the essential materials of the ferry was missing and lack of repairing one day the ferry was going down in the Gorai River. The fate of the ferry could not be known immediately. But some of the ocvals said, the spares of the ferry were sold as retail at Taka several lakh.
In 2012 the authority again sent two ferries with two ferry bridges and two pontoons for plying from Langalbandh Bazar to the other side of the Gorai River in Sripur upazila under Magura district and deputed a driver and a khalasi there about four years ago. But the ferries could not go to services for an unknown reason.
According to businessmen, the ferries, supposed to carry vehicles including buses and trucks and people from and to Jhenidah, Magura, Rajbarai, Faridpur, Kushtia and Dhaka would greatly ease road communications in the areas.
Driver of a ferry Mozammel Haque said, at the beginning one of the ferries functioned for seven days, carrying thousands of people and a good number of vehicles across the river, but suddenly the service was stopped due to unknown reasons.
He added five to six thousand people cross the river on boats with life risk daily. The number of passengers could rise to 15 thousand to 20 thousand on weekly market days of Langalbandh Bazar on Sunday and Thursday.
