2 drug traders killed in gunfight

Two drug peddlers were killed in a gunfight with police at Bagmara under Khulna Kotwali police station in the city on Wednesday.
The deceased were identified as Md. Raju, son of Md. Babul, resident of Bagmara and Md. Manik Sheikh, son of Sultan Sheikh from Mistripara Khalpar, in the city.
Police said, On Tuesday night at around 8 pm, a special team of Police led by OC Md. Humayun Kabir of Khulna Kotwali police station conducted a drive at Bagmara and arrested two drug peddlers. According to their confession; with them, police went to Bagmara Bankers Lane area Khalpar (Beside a Canal) with a view to recovering arms and drugs.
Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, the cohorts of the two arrested drug peddlers opened fire targeting them and the members of police also retaliated with gun, triggering a “gun battle”. After about one hour’s gunfight, police found the dead-bodies of Md. Raju and Manik Sheikh, but the accomplices of the drug peddlers managed to flee from the scene.
One hundred-fifty pieces of Yaba tablets, two machetes, two sharp knives and two rounds of bullets were recovered from the spot, according to police.
While contacted, Md. Humayun Kabir, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Khulna Kotwali thana told this correspondent that the slain drug peddlers were accused in five cases. He said adding that five policemen were injured during the gunfight.
The dead bodies of Raju and Manik were sent to Khulna Medical College Hospital Morgue for autopsies, OC added.
