Two alleged drug peddlers were killed in a gunfight with joint forces, comprising Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) in Himchari of Cox’s Bazar early Thursday.
The deceased are Enamul Haque, 33, and Forhad Hossain Arif, 32, said Ramu Police Station’s Inspector (Investigation)
Mizanur Rahman. Company Commander Major Mehedi Hassan of RAB-7 camp in Cox’s Bazar said, “The incident took place near a RAB-BGB checkpost at Himchori on Cox’s Bazar-Teknaf Marine Drive road around 4:00am.”
Enamul and Forhad were heading towards Cox’s Bazar in a white car, when the law enforcers signaled them to stop for checking. When the law enforcers got close to the vehicle, the alleged drug peddlers started shooting at them forcing the lawmen to retaliate, ensuing a 10-minute “gunfight”, he added. At one point, the shooting from the car stopped and RAB found them injured with bullets inside the car.
They were rushed to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital where the doctor on duty declared them dead.
The law enforcers recovered huge amount of Yaba pills, pistols, a rifle and bullets from the spot.
Meanwhile, RAB members detained over 100 people during an anti-narcotics drive at Geneva camp in Dhaka’s Mohammadpur area on Thursday.
Several teams of RAB-2 conducted the two-hour drive from 4:30am and detained over 100 suspecting their involvement in illegal drug trading and for using drugs, said Rabiul Islam, Operation Officer of RAB-2.
“They will take legal actions against the drug dealers,” Rabiul Islam added.
