Customs Intelligence officials detained two persons on charge of carrying foreign currency worth around Tk 28 lakh illegally at the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA) on Friday.
Detainees Ariful Islam is a resident of Mirpur, while Shamim Dhali lives at Mohammadpur of the city, customs official said.
Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate (CIID) Director General Moinul Khan said, “Customs officials acting on a tip off challenged them when they were heading towards a Kuala Lumpur bound flight to travel abroad. At on stage, customs men searched their bodies and discovered the hidden currency.”
A total of 1,28,500 Saudi Riyals and 556 Malaysian Ringgits were recovered from their possession, the DG said. In Bangladeshi currency, the amount is Tk 27,87,639, he said.
A case was filed with the Airport Police Station in this connection, according to him.
