2 businessmen jailed for drafts fraudulence

The Chittagong Chief Metropolitan Magistrate, in a verdict here on Tuesday, sentenced two businessmen to separate terms of imprisonment and fined about Taka twenty two thousand on charges of submitting fraudulent bank drafts. The convicted businessmen are Mohammad Ikram Abedin Chowdhury and Mohammad Jalal Uddin, court source said.
The prosecution story is in short that the accused persons deposited 29 drafts at KC Dey road of Sonali Bank Branch denominations of TK 19 lakh 75 thousand, issued by Oman International Exchange on September 12 in 2005 and they received TK 15 lakh 50 thousand from Sonali Bank, court hill branch Chittagong as usual. Meanwhile, the head office of Sonali Bank confirmed on November 9 in 2005 that the drafts were forged.
Later, Monir Ahmed, Manager of Sonali Bank Court hill branch filed a case with Kotwali thana in the city on November 15 in 2005 against the businessmen for drafts fraudulence. The court held the businessmen guilty after hearing the statements of eight prosecution witnesses and reviewing the documents, the source added.
The court in its verdict on Wednesday sentenced nine years imprisonment to Mohammad Ikram Abedin Chowdhury and eight years imprisonment to Mohammad Jalal Uddin. The court sent them jail after pronouncing the verdicts.
