A speedy trial tribunal here on Wednesday convicted two siblings and sentenced them to death in connection with the murder of a man in Fatikchhari upazila over land related dispute.
The convicts are Jahedul Alam alias Loha Jahed and Khorshedul Alam alias Jongi Kalam, sons of late Sirajul Haque of Purba Nanupur Dhalkata area. They went into hiding after securing bail from the High Court.
According to the prosecution, the convicts had a land related dispute with expatriate Md Yunus.
On April 11, 2011, when Yunus and his cousin Md Hasan were returning from an arbitration meeting the convicts took them to their house.
Later, keeping the gate locked, they hacked the duo indiscriminately, leaving them critically injured.
Locals rescued them breaking the gate and took them to hospital where Yunus died. Police arrested the two brothers from the spot.
On April 12, victim’s wife Khotiza Akhter filed a case against Jahedul and Khorshedul.
After examining all the records and witnesses, divisional speedy trial tribunal judge Abdul Halim handed down the verdict.
