Two Bangladeshi-origin women elected as councillors in Australia for the first time in history.
They are Sabrin Farooqui of the Labor Party and Sajeda Akter Sanjida of the Liberal Party.
The elections were held in 124 city councils in New South Wales on December 4, as the pandemic caused the date to be rescheduled twice.
The state council elections this year included 30 candidates from Bangladesh. Among them, four were female.
Meanwhile, both nominated candidates of the Labor Party, Masud Chowdhury of Campbelltown City Council and Sumon Saha of Cumberlan have been re-elected.
Shibli Chowdhury elected as an independent candidate for Dubbo Regional Council.
Over 5 million people across Australia voted in the council elections.
