The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has detained two suspected activists of banned militant outfit Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh JMB in Dhaka.
Mizanur Rahman, 37, and Ibrahim Shahjahan, 30, were arrested in Sayedabad around 8:30pm Tuesday, RAB-11 Commander Lt Col Kamrul Hasan told bdnews24.com. The RAB
found jihadi books and leaflets on them, according to Hasan. The suspects are followers of the Sarwar-Tamim group, a revived faction of JMB, and are charged of militancy in multiple cases filed with Narayanganj police, he said.
The JMB came into the limelight by claiming responsibility for around 500 simultaneous bomb explosions at 300 locations across the country in 2005. The government banned the outfit and executed its top leaders, Shaykh Abdur Rahman and Siddiqul Islam alias Bangla Bhai. The remaining members formed another outfit, neo-JMB, which carried out most of the militant attacks over the past few years including the killing of 20 people including 17 foreigners at an upscale Gulshan café last year, according to police.
The RAB identifies the same outfit by the name, Sarwar-Tamim group. The radical group had lost most of its top leaders in police raids conducted over the last one year, according to law-enforcement agencies.
