Expatriates Welfare and Overseas Employment Minister Nurul Islam has said about 2.5 lakh Rohingya people have left for abroad with Bangladeshi passports and sending their earning foreign currencies back to their homeland in Myanmar.
The minister said this while inaugurating the World Conference Series: 2018, organised by the Centre for Non Resident Bangladeshis at a hotel in the capital.
“Some local agents are behind there to help the Rohingyas to get Bangladeshi passports. They attain them from local union council chairmen and other local government authorities after providing fake documents,” he said.
About Malaysian labour market, the minister said that a syndicate had been formed by the Malaysian authorities for recruiting workers from Bangladesh. “This syndicate should send workers in the country smoothly. If the workers recruitment is stopped, all concerned will be affected,” he said.
The minister said the present government is encouraging expatriates to invest in Bangladesh. He also urged the Bangladeshi expatriates
working abroad to send remittance to home using legal channels to boost country’s foreign currency reserve.
The government is trying the best to facilitate safe, orderly and regular migration of the workers to ensure their welfare at home and abroad, he said. The minister called for taking united efforts for building ‘Sonar Bangla’.
The organisation President MS Shakil made the welcome address at the conference while former minister Sheikh Shahidul Islam, former adviser to caretaker government economist Hossain Zillur Rahman, Election Commission secretary Helal Uddin Ahmed and Bangladesh Bank deputy governor Abu Hena Reza Hasan also spoke at the conference.
