The subordinate courts across the country have granted bail to a total of 17,056 under-trial prisoners including 190 children in nine working days till April 25.
The prisoners have already get released from jails after securing bails, said Md Saifur Rahman, spokesperson of the Supreme Court, in a statement. The courts held hearing through virtual process as the regular activities of courts across the country, including the Appellate and High Court Divisions of the Supreme Court remain suspended, due to ongoing surge of Covid-19 cases.
The courts disposed of a total of 30,500 bail petitions during the period, also read the statement.
The subordinate courts have disposed of a total of 3,652 bail petitions in connection with different criminal cases via virtual hearings and granted bail to 1,839 under-trial prisoners on Sunday, according to the statement.
Earlier, chief justice Syed Mahmud Hossain issued some directives for the courts about dealing with urgent cases through using information and communication technology during the ongoing closure.
