19 fishermen jailed for catching hilsa in Chandpur

A mobile court here on Monday morning sentenced 19 fishermen to two years imprisonment for violating the ongoing temporary ban on hilsa fishing.
Md Shafiqur Rahman, district fisheries officer, said a team of Haimchar upazila taskforce members conducted a drive in the Meghna River from 12am to early morning and arrested the 19 fishermen, hailing from Munshiganj and Shariatpur districts, along with 30 kiligrams of jatkas and 35,000 metre of current net.
Later, the fishermen were produced before a mobile curt headed by Abu Hasnat Md Mainuddin, Haimchar upazila nirbahi officer (UNO), which sentenced them to two years imprisonment each.
The government imposed a two-month ban on catching, selling, transporting and hoarding of hilsa in the peak breeding season across the country to increase the production of hilsa and protect the mother hilsas.
