A mobile court in a drive arrested 19 fishermen in the last 24-hour from the rivers of Padma and Meghna in the district and fined Taka 95 thousand for defying the government’s ongoing a 22-day ban on Hilsha fishing, catching, selling, transporting and marketing.
According to the district fisheries office, 60 kgs of mother Hilsha and 1.38 lakh meters of banned current nets were seized from their possession during the drive.
A joint team of Fisheries Department, District Administration, Upazila Administration, RAB, Police and Naval Police conducted the mobile court.
District Fisheries Officer Pranab Kumar Karmakar said the seized nets were destroyed by fire and the seized Hilsha has been distributed to the orphanages, madrasa and poor people in the area. The government has imposed a 22-day ban starting from October 4 on catching, selling, storing and transporting Hilsha, to ensure safe spawning of the Mother Hilsha, during its peak breeding period.
