A court here on Tuesday sent 19 leaders and activists of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) to jail in a case over upazila election violence turning down their bail petitions.
The 19 BNP leaders and activists surrendered to the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court, Barisal and appealed for bail in the case in the morning.
After the hearing, Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Wahiduzzaman Shikder passed the order for sending the 19 to jail. On February 23, 2014, a group of BNP activists set afire the upazila unit Awami League (AL) office in Sadar upazila late night on February 23 before the upazila election on February 27. Khandokar Zakir Hossain, organising secretary of the upazila unit of AL, filed a case in this connection with Kotwali Police Station.
