19.76 lakh tonnes potato production target for Rangpur region

The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) has fixed a target of producing over 19.76 lakh tonnes of potato from 94,164 hectares of land in Rangpur agriculture region during this Rabi season, official sources said.
The DAE, Bangladesh Agriculture Development Corporation (BADC),
Bangladesh Agriculture Research Institute (BARI) and other agri-related departments have taken adequate steps to make the potato farming programme successful.
Meanwhile, the farmers have already started sowing seed of the early variety potato after harvesting short duration varieties of Transplanted Aman (T-Aman) rice in all five districts under the region to harvest those from the first week of December.
“The tender plants of early variety potato are growing superbly amid
favourable climatic condition in Rangpur, Kurigram, Gaibandha, Lalmonirhat and Nilphamari districts in the region,” DAE’s Horticulture Specialist Khondker Md Mesbahul Islam told BSS today.
Deputy Director of the DAE for Rangpur SM Ashraf Ali said that sowing of potato seed would get full momentum by this month end with further progress in T-Aman harvest in the region.
“The agri-related departments, seed dealers and many NGOs have been
providing quality potato seed and inputs, including fertilisers, among the farmers, to make the fixed potato farming programme successful,” he added.
Talking to BSS, farmers Echhahaq Ali and Aiyub Ali of Kathihara village under Sadar upazila here said that they already sowed early variety potato seed after harvesting short duration Aman rice to harvest and sell those by first week of the next month.
Similarly, Abdul Haque, Latifur Rahman and Kuddus Munshi of different villages in Gangachara upazila said they also completed sowing seed of the early variety potato and the tender plants were growing well.
Farmers Ariful Haque Batul, Abul Hossain and Jahangir Alam of
Najirdigar village here said that they would cultivate potato on more land after harvesting Aman crop this season as they got bumper production and huge profits last year.
Additional Director of the DAE Shah Alam said the officials of the agriculture related departments and organisations already started providing suggestions and technologies to the farmers to make the potato farming programme a success.
Initiative to produce Haribhanga mango juice
A private sector local group of industries has been setting up a modern factory for commercial production of juice from the highly fleshy, fibreless and tasty local variety Haribhanga mango in Rangpur. Prime Pusti Limited, a subsidiary wing of Rangpur-based Sonic Prime Group, has taken the initiative considering expanded cultivation and repeated bumper production of the popular Haribhanga mango having huge demand both in local markets and aboard.
Managing Director of Sonic Prime Group Professor Dr Akkas Ali Sarker said that the latest technologies, machineries and equipments were being importing from China to complete setting up of the factory at Mominpur area under Sadar upazila in the district.
