180 rare tortoises seized in Benapole

Members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) seized 180 tortoises of rare species from Baropota border area under Benapole port on Sunday Morning.
Lieutenant Colonel Jahangir Hossain, commanding officer of BGB-26, said being tipped off that some tortoises of rare species were being smuggled into the country from India, a team of BGB conducted a drive in the area and seized 180 tortoises worth Tk90 lakh from sacks and suitcases.
Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, the smugglers managed to flee away.
The seized tortoises were handed over to Jessore forest department.
3 ‘terrorists’ held with pistol, bombs
UNB from Benapole adds: Police arrested three alleged terrorists along with a foreign-made pistol and three hand bombs from Shangkorpasha village in Abhoynagar upazila of Jessore district on Tuesday night.
The arrestees were identified as Shanto Roy,28, son of Narayan Chandra Roy, Simanto Mallik,23, son of Danbir Mallik, and Saddam Hossain,25, son of Oliar Rahman, all residents of Kudala village of the upazila.
Officer-in-charge of Abhoynagar Police Station Nasir Uddin said local people of Shangkorpasha village caught the trio while they were coming there by a motorbike and demanded money to former union parishad member Sheikh Asaduzzaman as toll at about 11:00 pm.
Informed, police rushed to the spot and arrested the trio.
The law enforcers also recovered a foreign-made pistol and three hand bombs from the spot.
A case was filed in this connection.
Youth’s body recovered in B’baria
UNB, Brahamanbaria
Police recovered the body of a young man at Gongasagar railway station in Akhaura upazila on Sunday morning.
The identity of the deceased could not be ascertained immediately.
Locals spotted the body of the young man lying at the railway station around 8am and informed police.
