UNB, Gazipur :
Police arrested at least 18 leaders and activists of BNP for ‘sabotage plan’ from different places of the city during a drive on Wednesday night.
Police sources said 18 leaders and activists of BNP-Jamaat were arrested for planning sabotage in support of the ongoing 120-hour nationwide hartal, enforced by the BNP-led 20-party alliance.
Of the arrestees, four leaders and activists were arrested from Kapasia, 10 from Joydebpur, one from Sripur, two from Kaliakoir and one from Tongi areas.
The fifth day of the 120-hour nationwide hartal, enforced by the BNP-led alliance as part of its movement for what it says resorting democracy and people’s voting right and protesting the government’s ‘repressive acts’ and growing incidents of extrajudicial killing, is passing off peacefully alongside the blockade.
While its 72-hour nationwide hartal was scheduled to end at 6.00am Wednesday, the alliance on Tuesday extended it by 48 hours till 6.00am Friday.
In a statement, BNP joint secretary general Salahuddin Ahmed, on behalf of the alliance, announced the extended shutdown programme.
