18 more tiger sanctuaries to be established in Sundarbans

With a view to save and spread tigers, 18 more sanctuaries will be established in the Sundarbans. This proclamation will be declared within few days, Forest Department sources said.
Md. Jahiruddin Ahmed, Conservator of Forest (CF) of Khulna region ascertained the matter recently.
Forest division sources said, At present only four tiger sanctuaries are available in the Sundarbans which are not sufficient at all. Due to natural disasters and disturbances created by human being, bio-diversity of the Sundarbans are facing threat. Tigers and other species are decreasing from the Sundarbans, the largest mangrove and world heritage site, declared by the United Nations (UN).
In order to protect the bio-diversity of the Sundarbans, the government has planned to increase sanctuaries in the Sundarbans.
Tiger analysts welcomed this plan and also told that the government should also take proper lawful structure simultaneously.
According to the concerned sources, 334 species of mangroves and 375 species of animals live in the Sundarbans. The Sundarbans were declared as protected area in 1975.
In 1997, four sanctuaries were established at Katka, Kochikhali, Nilkamal and west side of the Sundarbans. These areas might be include for the new sanctuaries, sources added.
Sources further said, particularly for increasing tigers, the new sanctuaries will be established.
Modinul Ahsan, Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) of the west division of the Sundarbans said, sanctuaries are more protected for bio-diversity than that of other places.
Md. Sayeedul Islam, DFO of the East division of the Sundarbans said, there is no alternative of sanctuaries for wild lives.
“Declaration by the government for establishing new sanctuaries in the Sundarbans might come at the end of this year”, DFO Sayeed added.
Analysts think, if we want to get fruitful result of the sanctuaries, it is necessary to increase the ability of the forest division.
