At least 18 people were killed and 52 others injured in separate road crashes across the country on Saturday.
In Natore, at least 14 people, including two children and four women, were killed and 25 others injured when a bus collided head-on with a human hauler (leguna) on the Natore-Pabna highway’s Kadam Chilan Clickmore area of Baraigram upazila.
The identities of the deceased have been identified as leguna driver Abdur Rahim (Sayedpur, Nilphamary), Baraigram upazila’s Narayanpur villages’s resident Abu Taher’s wife Rojufa Begum and Rupchad’s wife Shefali Begum, reports our Natore correspondent quoting police.
The accident took place at around 4:00pm when a speedy bus collided with a human hauler coming from the opposite direction in the afternoon of the day, said GM Shamsur Noor, Officer-in-Charge of Bonpara Highway Police station.
The OC said that 10 people died on the spot and 25 passengers of both the vehicles were injured as the accident occurred.
Three others succumbed to their injuries on the way when they were being taken to Bonpara Amina Hospital and one died in the hospital, the police official also said.
The other injured persons were taken to different hospitals, including Natore Sadar Hospital and Rajshahi Medical College Hospital, he added.
A three-member probe committee including Additional District Magistrate Saiduzzaman, Additional SP Abu Hasnat and BRTA AD Saidur Rahman, was formed, said DC Shahina Khatun.
She also said, Tk at 10,000 has been sanctioned for each deceased family and Tk 5000 for each injured family.
In Cumilla two persons were killed and 25 others injured in a road accident on the Dhaka-Chattogram Highway at Jimaltola in Daudkandi upazila on Saturday morning.
The identities of the deceased could not be known yet.
Abul Kalam Azad, Officer-in-Charge of Daudkandi Highway Police, said that the accident took place when the Chattogram-bound bus of ‘Shyamoli Paribahan’ hit a roadside tree after its driver lost control over the steering around 5 am, leaving two bus passengers dead on the spot and 25 others injured.
On information, police recovered the bodies from the spot and sent these to Cumilla Medical College Hospital for autopsy while the injured were admitted to Gouripur Health Complex, the OC added.
In Rajshahi a man and his grandson were killed and two others were injured in a collision between a motorcycle and an auto-rickshaw at Katakhali near the Rajshahi Metropolitan on Saturday morning. The deceased were identified as Md Nazim,50 and his grandson Arafat, 3. Mahedi Hasan, Officer-in-Charge of Katakhali Police Station, said that the motorcycle collided with the auto-rickshaw carrying Nazim, his wife and two grandsons on their way to a relative’s house, leaving Nazim dead on the spot and three others injured. The injured were taken to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital and Arafat died on the way.
