18 killed in road accidents

At least 18 persons were killed and 22 others injured in separate road accidents in Jessore, Brahmanbaria, Nilphamri and Dhaka on Tuesday.
At least 10 people were killed and 22 others injured as a bus plunged into a ditch beside the Jessore-Benapole Highway after hitting a tree at Beneali area of the Upazila on Tuesday morning, police said.
The victims were identified as: Prosenjit Pal, 34, son of Dilip Pal of Nawabganj, Dhaka, Jamal Hossain, 45, son of Bazlur Rahman of Demra, Bidyut Ghosh, 38, son of Basudeb Ghosh of Demra, Dhaka, Momin Uddin, son of Anwar Ali of Comilla, Nirmal Chandra Saha, 55 and his wife Hena Saha, 40 of Kishoreganj, bus helper Abdul Momin of Rajbari, Salam, 30 of Munshiganj. The identity of another victim could not be known immediately.
Reshma Sharmin, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) of Jessore said the Benapole-bound bus of ‘Shohag Paribahan’ from Dhaka hit a roadside tree at Beneali area around 6:30 am and fell into a roadside ditch when the driver lost control over the steering, leaving six of its passengers killed on the spot and 22 others injured.
The injured were admitted to Jessore Medical College Hospital and Jhikargachha Upazila Health Complex, where Jamaluddin succumbed to his injuries, she said.
Three of the injured succumbed to their injuries later at Jessore Medical College Hospital at around 10:00am, raising the death toll to 10, said Reshma Sharmin.
A municipal worker of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) was killed when a mechanized bike hit him at Khilgaon area in the capital on the day.
The victim was identified as Abdus Salam, 50, son of Mohammad. He used to live at Tekpara under Trimohoni area in city’s Khilgaon.
In another incident, five people including two women and two children were killed in a road accident at Sarail Upazila, in Brahmanbaria on Tuesday. The victims were identified as Mizanur Rahman, 35, his wife Nilufa Begum, 29, their son Zobaid Mia, 4, Mahfuz Mia, 50 and his son Masum Mia, 6, Officer in Charge of Sarail, Ali Arshad said.
The accident occurred around 3.30pm at Sarail Upazila’s Bertala area on the Dhaka-Sylhet highway, the OC said.
Police seized the truck which hit an auto-rickshaw killing the passengers, but the driver managed to flee.
In another accident two persons were killed in Nilphamari on the day. Of the two one was identified as van driver Kelta, while the other victim could not be identified. He was crushed under the wheel of a pick up van. The accident occurred at Kamarpukur on Syedpur-Rangpur Highway. Kelta was son of Mahiruddin of Syedpur Upazila. The pick up van was held by the local people, but the driver managed to escape.
