Staff Reporter :At least 18 people have been killed and 32 others injured in separate road accidents in different parts of the country, including Dhaka, Chittagong, Jhalkathi, Rangpur, Faridpur and Jessore in last 24 hours ending on Tuesday afternoon. Of them, ten people died on the spot and 20 were injured as a passenger bus plunged into a roadside ditch in Rajapur upazila of Jhalakati district yesterday afternoon.The identities of the deceased could not be known immediately. Police said that the number of death might be increased after completion of the rescue operation.Officer-in-Charge of Rajapur Police Station Md Masudurzzaman said, “A passenger bus plunged into a roadside ditch after the driver of the bus lost his control over the steering near the under-construction Rajapur-Biswasbari Bridge around 4pm, leaving seven people dead on the spot.””The death toll may rise further as some 20 others received serious injuries,” the OC said.In Rangpur, at least two persons were killed and 10 others injured in a road accident on Rangpur-Dhaka highway at Sholagari under Pirganj upazila of the district on Tuesday morning.Of the victims, one was identified as Piar Ali, 32, who hailed from Sothibari area of Mithapukur upazila.Officer-in-Charge of Mithapukur Police Station Israil Hossain said that a passenger-bus and goods laden truck collided at the area around 7:45am, leaving two people dead on the spot and 10 others injured.The injured were rushed to Pirganj and Palashbari health complexes.A driver of shallow-engine-run Nasiam vehicle was killed on the spot when some wooden rolls fell on his head at Jessore – Satkhira highway in Jessore yesterday afternoon.Officer-in Charge of Keshabpur Police Station Abdul Jalil said the victim was identified as Golam Rabbani, 37, was a resident of Monirampur upzila. He was the driver of light vehicle laden with wooden rolls.In another incident, two motorcycle riders were killed and 10 others injured in a road accident on the Dhaka-Khulna highway in Bahirdia area of sadar upazila in Faridpur district on Monday afternoon.The deceased were identified as Moshiur, 20, and Jony, 24, a resident of Khabaspur area of the town.Quoting witnesses, police said that the accident took place on the highway in the afternoon when a bus from the opposite direction rammed into the motorcycle carrying them, leaving the duo dead on the spot.Later the bus hit a roadside tree, leaving 10 passengers injured.In Chittagong, three people were killed in a road crash on Chittagong-Rangamati highway at Subedar Pukurparh in Hatazari upazila on yesterday night.One of the victims was identified as Saiful Anam Khan Chowdhury, 50, the eldest son of Anwar Khan Chowdhury, of Gohira union in Raozan upazila.Witnesses said the accident occurred at about 8pm when a truck rammed a CNG-run auto-rickshaw, killing the auto driver on the spot and two of its passengers injured.The two injured were taken to Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) where doctors declared them dead.Meanwhile, a woman was run over by a bus at Mirpur in the capital city Dhaka on Monday. Kafrul police’s sub-inspector Idris Ali said the accident occurred around 11pm at Section -14 in Mirpur.The unidentified woman, estimated to be in her 50s, died on the spot, he said quoting witnesses.The body has been kept at the morgue of Dhaka Medical College and Hospital.
