Gold smuggling rampant in Ctg: 18 kgs gold bars worth Tk 8cr seized

Gold smuggling has become rampant through Chittagong International Airport from very recently. Within the last two days, two consignments of gold worth Tk 8cr were seized at Airport. Customs of Chittagong Shah Amanat Interntional Airport recovered 154 gold bars weighing about 18 kgs from two incoming flights from abroad in Chittagong airport on Friday and Saturday. Airport sources said, Customs authority of the airport recovered 138 gold bars weighing about 16 kgs worth about Tk 7 crore from an abandoned position inside the aircraft of ‘Fly Dubai’ arrived from Muscat on Saturday at about 8 pm. After disembarkation of all passengers, an abandoned luggage was found inside the aircraft and after searching the luggage, 138 gold bars about 16 kgs were found. None was arrested in this connection. On the other hand, Customs sources said, one passenger identified as Monzoor Hossain (24) was arrested on Friday along with 2 kgs gold bars on Friday morning.These gold bars were kept inside the table fan that carried with him. Manzoor was the passenger of Air Arabia flight (No.G-9521) arrived from Sharjah, UAE. Asstt. Commissioner of the Airport customs Mr. Athelo Chowdhury apprised that the market prices of the seized gold bars approximately Tk. 80 lakh. These gold bars were detected while scanning the luggage of the passenger. Manzoor hailed from Fatikchari Upazila and the immigration police detained him in this connection.
