Chittagong District Administration, Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection, Chittagong Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and Consumers Association of Bangladesh in separate drives ion Wednesday fined 18 errant businesses Tk 2.25 lakh on different charges.
They also warned the fabric and garment traders to not to unstable the market by hiking prices.
DNCRP conducted drives in different areas of the city and fined eight businesses Tk 1.60 lakh for making iftar items using burnt oil, absence of dates and price list, producing food items in unclean environment and selling date-expired medicines, among others, said a press release.
Zubayer Ahmed, deputy director of DNCRP’s Chittagong office, led the drive with assistance of Chittagong Metropolitan Police, it added. The fined businesses are Tawakkul Hotel & Restaurant of Wasa area; Handy India, Mithai, Well Food and Candy of GEC area; and Highway Sweets, Aziz Store and Shikdar Medical of Lalkhan Bazar area, it said.
Meanwhile, market monitoring team of CDA went to Teri Bazar of the port city to observe the price charged at different clothing shops. Executive magistrates Tahmilur Rahman, Tahmina Akter and Ranjan Chandra Dey led the team where representatives of CCCI, and CAB were present.
Chittagong Metropolitan Police and Ansar assisted the team. The traders were warned verbally and asked to keep the prices at a reasonable level, said Tahmilur, adding, this was the first drive of this kind against the cloth traders.
Meanwhile, separate mobile courts of CDA fined 10 traders Tk 65,000 on different charges including selling of unapproved and date-expired medicines, absence of price list and selling of date-expired items, said another press release.
The mobile court drives were conducted in Foys Lake area and in Pahartali and Aturat Depot markets, it added.
