$173m loan deal to be signed with WB for govt agencies’ capacity building

Bangladesh will sign a loan deal with the International Development Association (IDA) of the World Bank (WB) on Tuesday to implement a project titled ‘Bangladesh Urban Resilience Project (URP).
The global lending agency earlier approved a credit in the amount of SDR 122.8 million (US$ 173 million equivalent) for the Bangladesh the project.
Economic Relations Division (ERD) Senior Secretary ERD Senior Secretary Mohammad Mejbahuddin and Operatory Adviser of the World Bank Dhaka Office Christine E Kimes will sign the financing deal on behalf of the government and the WB respectively, said an official here on Monday.
The signing ceremony will be held at ERD’s NEC conference in the afternoon.
The project will be implemented in coordination with the Dhaka North City Corporation, Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (Rajuk), Department of Disaster Management (DDM) and Project Coordinator and Monitoring Unit (PCMU) Department and Planning Commission to face disaster and urgent situations and conduct rescue operation during any emergency period.
The project aims to strengthen the capacity of government agencies to respond to emergency events and strengthen systems to reduce the vulnerability of building construction to disasters in Dhaka and Sylhet.
Bangladesh is among the most disaster-prone countries in the world, and the global lending agency agreed that this intervention is crucial to support the authorities’ plans to invest in disaster risk management, according to an official document.
