UNB, Dhaka :
Members of newly formed River Police conducted drives against catching hilsa in three districts and held 17 fishermen along ‘current net’ and hilsa worth about Tk 16 lakh in 24 hours ending at 6:00 am on Wednesday.
The districts are Chandpur, Patuakhali and Sariatpur.
The detained fishermen were sentenced to different simple jail terms through mobile courts.
The river police have been conducting the anti-hilsa catching drive as the government imposed a ban
on catching, selling, manufacturing and transportation of hilsa for 11 days from October 5 to 15, the peak time of breeding, aiming to boost its production.
Sources at the Police Headquarters said members of Alu Bazar River police outpost in Chandpur Sadar upazila and Neel Komal river police outpost in Haimchar, Chandpur, Koakata river police outpost in Kalapara and Kalaiya river police outpost in Baufal, Patuakhali, Sureshwar river police outpost under in Nariya, Shariatpur and Chardoani river outpost in Patharghata, Barguna conducted the drives during the period.
