Biting cold accompanied by a chilling wave has mounted attack on pneumonia patients in the district. during the last one week, 17 children died of the disease at Sadar Hospital.
Hospital sources said, in addition to pneumonia, diarrhoea also caused patients to rush to hospitals and clinics for treatment.
According to Shourav Datta, in-charge of Children’s Ward at Sadar Hospital, said, in the last week, 337 pneumonia patients have been admitted to hospitals due to extreme cold. Out of them, 17 die while 146 children are undergoing treatment, he informed.
“Severe cough with respiratory trouble is the main symptom of the disease”, he said.
On the other hand, many guardians alleged that due to insufficient beds, most of them were compelled to keep their kids on the floor at the hospital.
They also alleged there are an acute shortage of doctors and nurses at the hospital.
Khodiza Begum of Ramu upazila, mother of nine-month old Rumaisa, who is suffering from respiratory troubles, complained that due to the influx of patients, the treatment of her child got delayed, which led to more critical condition.
Later, she was provided with oxygen and nebuliser, the mother said.
Hadiza Begum, mother of pneumonia patient Jainab, also alleged that despite serious respiratory complexity, her child was not provided with a single seat.
On duty nursing supervisor of the ward said heavy rush has caused this undesirable situation.
When asked about the deteriorating situation, Resident Medical Officer of Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital Dr Sultan Ahmed Siraji said the dearth of doctors and nurses might be the cause.
He advised the guardians to take advice of doctors immediately in the case of any problem.
