Seventeen Bangladeshis, who were defrauded by Bangladeshi agents, brokers and a Vietnamese company, were provided accommodation at a hotel on Thursday after spending four days under the open sky near the Bangladesh embassy in Hanoi.
The company that hired these 17 Bangladeshis for employment in Vung Tau finally took responsibility of their accommodation, Bangladesh Ambassador to Vietnam Samina Naz wrote in a Facebook post on Thursday night.
It was possible “after our intense negotiation with Vietnam Foreign Office, Vietnam Police & the owner of the company,” she said.
The 17 Bangladeshis had traveled to Hanoi from Vung Tau, around 1,677 kilometres away from Hanoi, and had been demanding repatriation to Bangladesh.
Their company, PHX, hired them in early January this year but could hardly provide them jobs, said Faridul Islam, one of the migrants.
“Atiq and Saiful [Bangladeshi brokers operating in Vietnam] brought you by using my company name. They could not give jobs, so what can I do?” Faridul quoted the PHX owner as saying.
Faridul also said Atiq and Saiful threatened them of grave consequences as they recently talked to media. The 17 migrants then travelled to Hanoi to seek the Bangladesh embassy’s assistance for repatriation.
On July 3, the embassy repatriated 11 such Bangladeshis. Since then, 45 more
Bangladeshis travelled to Hanoi and the embassy in cooperation with Vietnam Police provided them accommodation.
When the group of 17 travelled to Hanoi and took position on the roadside near the Bangladesh embassy, the mission held meetings with Vietnam authorities and eventually the company owner went to Hanoi and took responsibility of the 17 Bangladeshis.
“We described all our problems we faced in Vung Tau in front of Bangladesh embassy officials, police and the company owner. The owner could not withstand it and finally agreed to provide our accommodation until our repatriation,” Faridul said.
