The leaders of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) on Friday alleged that the government hit the judiciary being aggrieved with the Supreme Court verdict that had scrapped the 16th amendment to the constitution.
The amendment had re-empowered the parliament to remove the apex court judges for misconduct and incapacity.
The BNP leaders came up with the remarks while addressing separate
programmes in the capital yesterday. BNP Standing Committee Member Moudud Ahmed at a discussion organised by Democratic Movement at the National Press Club said the government damaged the dignity, respect and image of the judiciary by making the condition of the chief justice bad.
Moudud, also a senior lawyer of the Supreme Court, asked if he (Chief Justice SK Sinha) told lie in the observations of the 16th amendment verdict, which stated that Bangladesh did not attain independence by a single person but by all people.
This statement caused so much anger and hatred of them (ruling Awami League) towards him (Sinha), the BNP leader said.
At a human chair programme min the city, BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi said the government became embarrassed and aggrieved with the observations of the verdict of the Supreme Court.
“So the attack was made on the backbone of the judiciary,” he complained.
In another human chain programme in front of the National Press Club, Bangladesh Kalyan Party demanded the return of its Secretary General M M Aminur Rahman, who has remained missing since August 27.
